15 million men, women and children have been victim of transatlantic slave trade for around 400 years which is considered to be one of the darkest chapters of human history. The day is a golden opportunity to remember and honour those who have died and suffered because of this brutal slavery system.
The day raises awareness about the side effects of prejudice and racism today. To permanently honour the victims, a memorial has been made at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The winning design for the memorial called The Ark of Return by Rodney Leon was selected through an international competition on September 2013.
On this day, we can learn more about various forms of slavery especially transatlantic slave trade and how they suffered brutally through the hands of different people which ultimately led to their death.
