The day is a very important one as Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa on this day in 1915. It is an ideal platform for the government to contact scattered communities who live in different parts of the world.
PBD conventions are held every year since 2003. The format of these conventions has been revised and since 2015 PBD is held once every two years and theme-based PBD conferences are conducted during the intervening period where policymakers, stakeholders and experts from the diaspora community mark their presence.
PBD is celebrated to remember the contribution of the Overseas Indian community to the development of the country. The day is one of the most important days because it reminds us of the Indian community's contributions living abroad towards the development and progress of the country.
