PROFILE: World recalls Nelson Mandela on 101st birth anniversary

As we celebrate International Nelson Mandela Day on July 18, let us discuss something about him which made him a great revolutionary of his time and inspired others to follow his way of life.

He was an anti-apartheid revolutionary, philanthropist and political figure who was President of South Africa from 1994 - 99. He was the first black head of the state who was elected in a complete democratic nation. The main focus of his government was to fight against the discrimination of blacks and whites. 

He was arrested continuously and served 27 years in prison. After coming out of jail, he contested for the elections and became the President of South Africa. He was asked to contest the second term of the election but refused and was succeeded by Thabo Mkebi. 

He was a controversial figure for most of his life. He is an icon for social justice and democracy and received more than 250 prizes, including the Nobel Peace Prize. He resides in the hearts of South African people where he is called Madiba which translates to Father of the Nation.

Everyone in this world wants to be independent and free without any kind of interference from outside. Similarly, German Unity Day is celebrated to commemorate the reunification different German republics to form a single state.  The day is a national holiday in the country and it is celebrated by fireworks, festivals and ceremonies. Everybody wants to have freedom in their lives. Nobody loves to be someone's slave. Malaysia was also under the clutches of different countries ruling them and when the country got its freedom on 31st August 1957 the joy and enthusiasm of people knew no bounds.  They celebrated the day with a lot of pomp and joy and there are many official and unofficial ceremonies and observances on this day.
