He was an anti-apartheid revolutionary, philanthropist and political figure who was President of South Africa from 1994 - 99. He was the first black head of the state who was elected in a complete democratic nation. The main focus of his government was to fight against the discrimination of blacks and whites.
He was arrested continuously and served 27 years in prison. After coming out of jail, he contested for the elections and became the President of South Africa. He was asked to contest the second term of the election but refused and was succeeded by Thabo Mkebi.
He was a controversial figure for most of his life. He is an icon for social justice and democracy and received more than 250 prizes, including the Nobel Peace Prize. He resides in the hearts of South African people where he is called Madiba which translates to Father of the Nation.
