Joint Family and Nuclear Family

There are two types of families existing in India. One is the joint family system which is an old and traditional system where all the relatives of the family live together. Nuclear Family is a family where people do not live with their relatives and have a separate world of their own. Both families have their sets of advantages and disadvantages. Here we will be comparing joint and nuclear families and try concluding which is the best environment for a person.

1. Unity

Joint families are always together and united. They form a bond between two generations. The tradition and culture keep on passing throughout the family lineage and people get to know about their values and traditions.

2.  Insurance for Elderly

Joint families serve as insurance to older generations as they can stay at home without worrying about anything else. They have a safe environment called home where they spend their time.

3. Dependency

Unlike nuclear families, people can depend on each other in a joint family for any kind of work. This makes them strong and confident.

4. Leisure Time

Females have much more leisure time in joint families as compared to nuclear families as the work gets divided between various ladies in the house and the work is completed fast and quick.

5. Quarrels

Nuclear families face fewer quarrels as compared to joint families. The quarrels can be between parents and children or husband and wife.

6. Bonding

Nuclear families are based on love and respect for each other. It is about parental love and sibling connection.

7. Freedom

Nuclear families have much more freedom when compared to joint families. Nobody has to worry about what others will think. They are not answerable to anyone and can roam around and come back to their homes at their convenience. Democracy is a vital part of a nuclear family.

Thus, we see that both the family types have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages and it is perhaps difficult to choose the best of the two.
