National Safe Motherhood Day: A day to minimize the harmful after effects of motherhood

Motherhood is said to be the second birth of a female as she gives birth to a new life and nurtures her child to prepare him/her to face the world. There are many implications after a lady delivers a baby either due to diseases or some external factors.

The theme of this year is to save both mother and child from the harmful effects of coronavirus. After a request from WRAI or White Ribbon Alliance India, the government of India declared the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi to be National Safe Motherhood Day.

WRAI ensures that women have complete access and availability to care during pregnancy, childbirth and postbirth services. Safe motherhood implies that all women receive the care they need to be healthy and safe throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

There are 15% of maternal deaths in India across the world. 44,000 women die every year because of improper care during pregnancy. Although over 80% of women deliver in hospitals still the death rate is very high.

The number of women who received all four antenatal check-ups during pregnancy during the pandemic dropped by 51% and institutional deliveries declined by 79%. The family planning services demands satisfied by modern methods went down by 67%.
