National Cabbage Day: A day to recognize a nutritious vegetable

National Cabbage Day is celebrated to recognize one of the best garden staples which provide some of the best recipes for consumption.  You can check all your culinary skills by making corned beef and cabbage along with other seasonal dishes. 

The word cabbage is derived from the French word caboche which means head and cabbage comes in different forms. The different varieties of cabbage are cauliflower, broccoli, choy, bok, kohlrabi and Brussels sprouts. 

Cabbage is an olden food with origins in modern Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean. Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who brought cabbage to America. The head should be firm and dense when selecting a cabbage. 

The leaves of a healthy cabbage should be crisp and shiny without any browning or bruising. It is a very versatile food and can be eaten as steamed, raw or sauted. 

It is a very diverse food and has low calories. It is a popular diet food without any cholesterol, fat, sodium or carbohydrates. It is also a good source of Vitamin C. On this day, one can learn new cabbage dishes and try them at home.
