Indian Coast Guard Day: A day when centralized agency for search and rescue in India was established
Indian Coast Guard is a search, rescue and maritime law enforcement agency that protects the maritime interests of India and enforces the maritime laws of the country. It has its jurisdiction over the territorial waters of India which includes special economic zone and a contiguous zone.
The Indian Coast Guard was established by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Indian Parliament. It functions under the Ministry of Defense. The Coast Guard works closely with different agencies like the Department of Revenue, Department of Fisheries, Indian Navy and State and Central police forces.
The establishment of the Indian Coast Guard was suggested by the Indian Navy to provide non-military maritime services to the country. Due to the smuggling issues, the Indian Customs Department called Indian Navy to look into the matter before the Indian Coast Guard was established.
