Makar Sakranti or simply Sankranthi is a festival dedicated to Sun God. It is observed in Magha month of January every year and is celebrated across India and Nepal. It marks the end of winter days and the beginning of long days as the sun moves to Makara or Capricon rashi.
It is one of those festivals which moves according to the solar cycle, unlike other festivals which are set according to lunar cycles. The day is celebrated through colourful decorations and kids go to every house and sing and ask for treats.
There are melas, dances, bonfires feasts and kite flying on this day. Many people go and bathe in sacred lakes and rivers and thank Sun God. There is a Kumbha Mela held in every twelve years on Makar Sakranti where people go to Prayagraj and take a dip in the sangam of three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
